The new Sklar Lightweight Rear Rack has a large top platform, integrated cargo cages, and weighs just over 630 grams. We had a chance to take an early look at the rack during Sklar’s open house this weekend. Find photos and details here…
I already shared some details of Sklar’s new rear rack in my short piece on The Farm Open House last weekend, but since my visit, Sklar finished up a launch video and added some additional specs to their site. Sklar describes the Lightweight Rear Rack as “a minimal, sturdy, lightweight rear rack that is a true game-changer for bikepacking and general stuff-carrying.”
The Lightweight Rear Rack has an interesting mix of shapes and curves. The top platform is 388mm long by 108mm wide, with clean, rounded ends, and a single middle strut. It uses two removable fixed V-shaped leg segments, with bolt/nut upper struts that mount to the rack much lower than most racks. There are two mounting holes for the lower attachment, and the shape and size seem to be designed to fit Sklar’s higher-than-average lower rear rack mounting points. Adam says the rack is compatible with all Sklar frames and most bikes with rack mounts on the seat stays.
Both legs have integrated cargo cage-style mounting points that Sklar calls “gear loops” for lashing a bottle or dry bag to, not too dissimilar from the Hunter Cargo Rack Logan reviewed. The benefit of the three-piece design is that once disassembled, the entire rack lies completely flat, which could come in handy while traveling or flying with your bike.
The rack weighs 635 grams (1.4 pounds) and is rated for up to 30 pounds of cargo. The shape is inspired by a rack Adam made for his 2023 ride on the Tour Divide route, pictured above. Each rack includes trimmable aluminum struts and all required mounting hardware. A dimensional diagram can be found below Sklar’s overview video below if you’re uncertain whether it will work on your bike.
The Sklar Lightweight Rear Rack costs $140 USD and is available to purchase now from SklarBikes.com.
