The great thing about lesbian sex is that there are no specific “lesbian sex positions.” Sure, there’s scissoring, but when you’re free of the heteronormative constructs of what sex is “supposed” to look like, a whole new world of sexual possibilities opens up.
“Lesbian sex is special because it isn’t defined by one ‘main event.’ It’s defined by whatever the people involved decide counts as sex for them,” says certified sex therapist Casey Tanner, a sexpert for LELO. “That flexibility tends to invite more experimentation and playfulness, which tends to foster deeper intimacy and bonding.”
Could this be why lesbian and bi women are more likely to orgasm during sex than their straight counterparts? Probably! “When you take penetration and ejaculation off their pedestals, pleasure gets a lot more expansive,” says Tanner. “Erogenous zones get more attention, pacing becomes more flexible, and the roles we’ve been taught we must play during sex are more easily challenged. In lesbian sex, everything you’ve been taught to think of as foreplay becomes part of the main course.”
Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong way to have lesbian sex. “Make your goal connection and pleasure rather than trying to follow a script,” says Tanner. “You don’t have to choose a role (top vs. bottom), be an athlete, or wear a strap-on to have great sapphic sex.”
But if you need a little inspiration, here are 12 lesbian sex positions to inspire your next sapphic sexperience.
