Surveillance video showed him carrying two garbage bags filled with an unknown substance.The suspect forced his way into the apartment and threatened the victim with a knife, officials say. The victim managed to escape and provided responding officers with a key to the front entrance.As the officers approached the front door, an explosion erupted, knocking them off their feet, officials say. Some of the officers were launched into the gates of the residence.Officers rushed into the home, which became engulfed in fire, and located one person who was removed to safety, officials say.Body camera footage released later revealed that at least three children were pulled from the home.Seven officers suffered minor burns, and one suffered a laceration to the head.“We got very lucky today; this could have turned out very differently,” said Christopher McIntosh of the NYPD. “The dangerous explosion was so powerful, it knocked them off their feet. They stood up and ran into the burning home. They run to danger; they do not run away from it.”McIntosh says there have been numerous domestic incident reports at the location and that there were three expired orders of protection against the suspect, who remains unaccounted for.Sixteen individuals have been displaced and are receiving support from the Red Cross.The suspect is still at large, police said. Investigations are ongoing.
