Nigeria’s war on Islamist fighters to take back control of territory

With fighters, weapons and ideology moving across porous borders…the Sahel region of north Africa has become the global epicentre of jihadist violence in recent years.

Over half of global terror-related deaths now occur here, according to monitoring groups. For the people who live there, it’s a cycle of misery that affects all, regardless of their religion.

Our Africa Correspondent Jamal Osman was granted rare access with the Nigerian Army, as they look to wrestle back control of the country’s far northeast from Islamist fighters. Here’s his report from the city of Maiduguri.
