President Donald Trump has claimed Iran put forward a "much better" peace proposal 10 minutes after he cancelled his special envoys' trip to Pakistan for talks.

Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump did not go into any specifics on the new proposal, other than saying that Tehran had "offered a lot".

“We have all the cards. We’re not going to spend 15 hours in aeroplanes all the time, going back and forth, to be given a document that was not good enough,” he said, adding that the Iranians could always call Washington.

“They gave us a paper that could have been better, and interestingly, immediately when I cancelled it , within 10 minutes we got a new paper that was much better,” he added.

Trump said that he cancelled the latest round of negotiations because it was “a lot of travelling” and because Witkoff and Kushner, “weren’t meeting with the leader of the country”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had said beforehand that he would not meet directly with the two US envoys and wanted the talks to remain indirect, using Pakistan as a go-between.
