He described Iran's leadership as being "in turmoil", as talks between Washington and Tehran remain in limbo.
Earlier this week, Trump extended a ceasefire between the US and Iran after at least two ships were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US president said the move followed a request from Pakistan, which has been mediating in the conflict, to give Tehran time to present a “unified proposal” to end the war.
