General Information: Air superiority during WWII relied heavily on the rugged durability of American engineering. Aircraft like the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang were built to escort heavy bombers, but under new directives, pilots were ordered to pursue and destroy the enemy wherever they hid. In the Pacific, the Fifth Air Force developed heavily modified B-25G strafers equipped with a manually loaded 75mm M4 cannon, capable of sinking a destroyer from two miles away. Meanwhile, the technological race against the deadly kamikaze and Ohka rocket gliders led to the invention of the VT proximity fuse, a miniaturized radar within an anti-aircraft shell designed to detonate near the target.
