Lidl plans new €200m regional distribution centre in Cork

German supermarket chain Lidl is to invest €200m in a new regional distribution centre in Cork. The company is to seek planning permission for the new facility at Wallingstown in Little Island. The centre will be used to improve its logistical infrastructure in the south and southeast region as it plans to expand. "Our ambitious expansion plans to increase our store footprint across Munster and the southeast region over the next five years are well underway with new stores set to welcome customers over the coming months," said Tara O'Connor, Regional Managing Director for Munster at Lidl Ireland. "There are many other stores in the pipeline at various stages of the planning process so this investment in a new distribution centre is vital to meet the future needs of the business and to ensure we can continue to provide great value to our customers across the region." Lidl already has three regional distribution centre around the country, in Charleville, Mullingar and Newbridge. These are used to service its 180 stores, including 50 in Munster. A new Lidl store is due to open in Ballysimon in Limerick in early 2025 and Lidl is currently engaging in planning processes for six further stores in the Munster region in counties Limerick, Cork, Kerry, Clare and Waterford. It is hoped that if planning permission is granted the new Cork facility will be opened by 2030.
