Dublin Airport pilot found to be 'considerably' above blood alcohol limit

A pilot was found to be "considerably" over blood alcohol limits during a random inspection at Dublin Airport. The discovery was made during an unannounced random inspection by the IAA on a cargo aircraft in September 2024. The flight was from an international cargo operator and copies of pilot licences and mandatory documents was requested. But the issue came when a routine breathalyser test was carried out on the pilot. It was found that the pilot was not in a fit condition to operate the aircraft due to a blood alcohol level that far exceeded limits. As a result the pilot was taken off the aircraft and the plane was not permitted to take off. Proceedings were then taken in Dublin District Court, and the pilot's licence was later revoked by the FAA in the United States. In a statement, it said: "The matter was reported to the United States Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the FAA have advised that the pilot’s licence has been revoked. Therefore, the matter has now concluded. The IAA will continue to conduct unannounced checks on foreign aircraft operating into Irish airports and conduct breathalyser tests on flight crew, which includes pilots and cabin crew."
