Dublin lockdown legend Sam the Trinity Fox has died

Dublin lockdown legend Sam the Trinity Fox has died. The inquisitive fox, who shot to fame as he roamed the empty Trinity College campus during the Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, had been battling a leg injury for the last few weeks. And sadly, the "ethical decision" was taken to put Sam down this week. Trinity Biodiversity said: “In January, our beloved Sam the fox was picked up by Kildare Wildlife Rescue with the help of Biodiversity Officer Collie Ennis in the hopes that a leg injury he suffered could be treated. He got loving care at Grey Abbey veterinary care to try and restore his mobility. "They did all they could for weeks, but unfortunately it was not meant to be for Sam and the ethical decision was to put his down. Sam had a great life as the beloved Trinity fox.” “Rest in peace Sam!” Sam quickly became a campus legend as he strutted his stuff around the empty university. He was found to have a bad mange and was struggling to find food in the empty city, but was nursed back to health by the college's Biodiversity team. From there, his exploits were closely followed by a legion of online fans as the College posted updates on Sam's life. He became a father to five cubs in April 2021 - though that did cause some confusion over Sam's gender, which has since been confirmed as male - and was also known as a keen footballer on campus. Sam was even immortalised in poetry by the late Derek Mahon. In his final update posted on the Trinity Biodiversity Instagram, Sam can be seen getting his night tuna treat from Collie Ennis. “You’re looking very well, Sam,” Ennis said. “Come back tomorrow, I’ll bring you some more, okay? See you later.” Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content.
