Dublin cycleway to undergo 10 weeks of works less than six months after opening
A cycleway connecting to Clontarf to Dublin city centre is set to shut for ten weeks less than six months after it opened to the public. The route extends 2.7 km from the Clontarf Road/Alfie Byrne Road junction along North Strand Road to Amiens Street at Connolly Station. The scheme connects Royal Canal Greenway to the East Coast Trail and part of the Tolka Valley Greenway. The C2CC cycleway needs realignment works according to a Road Safety Audit by Dublin City Council. As a result, there will be a closure at the outbound cycle track at Fairview Avenue Lower and Merville Avenue. It officially opened to the public at the end of November with much fanfare. But the new works will bring the cycleway closer to the road at two junctions. This has been met with concern by locals, reports the Irish Independent reports. Local councillor Donna Cooney of the Green Party is calling for a pause and full review before any works take place. She said that bringing people "closer to where the cars are turning" won't make people feel safer. She also suggested that smaller measures should take place first and said that funding to "prevent rat running through Marino" should be prioritised first. Party colleague Feljin Jose has concerns that it deviates from national guidance. The Dublin city councillor said the new alignment will be a "complete deviation" from the National Transport Authority’s Cycle Design Manual. The council said the works will commence this week and will be completed in approximately ten. A spokesman said: "Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused and seeks the understanding and co-operation of the public during the course of these works."
