If You're Tired Of Waiting On GTA 6, Give This New Steam Game With "Very Positive" Reviews A Try
If you're bummed about GTA 6 being delayed to 2026 and are interested in filling the void, there's a new sandbox shooter out that is getting "very positive" reviews on Steam. Developed by Fallen Tree Games, the creators of American Fugitive, it takes inspiration from early GTA games and classic cop movies from the '80s and '90s. It's described as "a single-player, top-down, open-world action-arcade police game," and it might scratch the same itch as the original GTA games.
The GTA 6 delay was a pretty disappointing announcement, though after seeing the second trailer and how far they've come since the original trailer, it's probably worth the wait. In the meantime, games inspired by Grand Theft Auto may not be nearly as epic in scale, but can at least take you back to your early GTA days. Thankfully, this new game is pretty inexpensive and has great reviews so far on Steam in 2025, though it's only been out for a few days now.
The Precinct Is An Ode To Classic Cop Movies Inspired By GTA Originals
The Precinct is a police sim-type shooter starring Nick Cordell, "a rookie cop thrown in the deep end of policing a city crippled by crime, injustice, and corruption." The game features a top-down camera angle vis-à-vis the original GTA and GTA 2, and you'll travel around the city answering calls on Cordell's beat, performing menial tasks such as writing parking tickets, and even getting into shootouts with bank robbers.

The Precinct is an open-world experience with role-playing elements, though where it diverges most from GTA is that you will have to play the role of the good cop. In The Precinct, the player is encouraged to "play by the rules" and "breaches of conduct will result in disciplinary action." Moreover, there are no puzzle elements or detective work involved, and your job is more or less to follow orders and fight crime the old-fashioned way.
The Precinct Isn't GTA 6, But It's A Fun Nostalgia Trip
Modeled After 80s & 90s Cop Films, The Precinct Is A Worthwhile Throwback
While it's still in its early release stage, The Precinct seems to be pretty popular among those who have tried it out already, with a "very positive" rating on Steam and overall strong reviews. It's founded on a simple premise that pays off in a lot of ways. The graphics are pretty impressive as well, and I had a genuinely good time during a quick play test to see what The Precinct has to offer. The gameplay isn't overly complicated, and you will definitely get some throwback vibes to the old-school cop films of the 80s and 90s.

The Precinct also includes a random and spontaneous crime generation feature that promises to keep things interesting and provide a unique experience for every player with "nearly limitless gameplay possibilities." You will also be able to call in support units, engage in helicopter chases, upgrade your weapons and vehicles, and more. Overall, The Precinct feels like a modernized version of the classic GTA experience with a reimagined premise executed very well.
If you're looking for something to tide you over until GTA 6 finally drops in 2026, The Precinct could be a worthy addition to your library. While it won’t offer the sprawling scale or cinematic polish of the Rockstar juggernaut, it delivers a nostalgic, engaging experience rooted in classic top-down action gameplay. The game’s dedication to procedural policing, combined with unpredictable criminal activity and a richly animated city, creates a compelling sandbox that rewards exploration and law-abiding justice.
"The Precinct captures the gritty charm of its inspirations while injecting enough modern gameplay mechanics to keep things fresh."
Whether you’re issuing citations, chasing down suspects in high-speed pursuits, or calling in backup for an intense shootout, The Precinct captures the gritty charm of its inspirations while injecting enough modern gameplay mechanics to keep things fresh. It’s not trying to compete with GTA 6, but I'd recommend it for fans of the franchise.
