Bad Thoughts Review: I Enjoyed Tom Segura's Dark Comedy Sketch Show, But It Got Repetitive Quickly

Bad Thoughts is a dark comedy series that is unapologetic in its hectic and irreverent approach. Tom Segura returns in an all-new comedy special featuring six episodes packed with twisted skits. And while some skits land better than others, the entire thing ties together in a satisfying way that pays off in a classic Segura storytelling fashion. Segura allows his creativity and imagination to run wild as he explores a variety of characters who all appear to have a common theme of being inept, lacking confidence, or generally struggling with life. Through the challenges they face, the humor is incorporated in several ways with acts of wild and ludicrous violence, unusual spectacles, and unhinged choices. But this brand of wild and wacky humor is what makes the series work, and it stays true to the outrageous style. Bad Thoughts Has Some Things In Common With I Think You Should Leave Image via Netflix Immediately, the series and the layout of each episode feels reminiscent of another Netflix comedy show, I Think You Should Leave, from Tim Robinson. Robinson's absurdist humor and phenomenal physical comedy make that show into something very special, and it would be simple to write Segura's new series as a cash-grabbing duplicate. However, Bad Thoughts does do enough to separate itself from other comedy skit shows. Bad Thoughts is entertaining, witty, and the absurd nature of the comedy makes it a pleasure to follow from start to finish. For instance, the tone here is much darker, and the stories feel more consequential. Yes, the characters change between each segment and Segura wears a lot of different hats, but it also weaves together a larger story. Compared to other skit shows, Bad Thoughts is more coherent in its approach to absurdist humor, and the intense and graphic humor serves to build up the overall show rather than being separate from one another. Bad Thoughts is entertaining, witty, and the absurd nature of the comedy makes it a pleasure to follow from start to finish. And while it may not be the first comedy show of its kind, Segura helps to enhance the concept and make it into something worth watching — for fans of Segura and those who are new to his brand of comedy. Bad Thoughts Pushes The Line Constantly In A Great Way Image via Netflix Segura pulls in some additional talent to help flesh out the episodes, but for the most part, he is the beating heart of the series. And as much as Bad Thoughts pushes the line, it's clear that Segura knows how to keep things fun without making them offensive. Of course, comedy is a medium that pushes boundaries, and Segura's comedy special is no different, but at no point does the series go too far, which is almost surprising considering its intense nature. Six short episodes that come in at around 20 minutes or less each help to ensure that the show doesn't get too weighed down by its own content. The series may not to everyone's taste in humor. At its core, it's an absurd comedy with intense violence, lewd images, and dark themes. And Segura does not hold back when it comes to capitalizing on these jokes. It's loud, unabashed, and it can feel a little one-note because of that. However, six episodes at around 20 minutes or less each help to ensure the show isn't too weighed down by its own content, pushing Bad Thoughts towards its inevitable ending.
