Every Currency In DOOM: The Dark Ages And How To Earn Them
DOOM: The Dark Ages mixes up the gameplay of its predecessor in more ways than one, offering a substantial amount of customization to keep its gameplay feeling fresh. Not only are there plenty more ranged weapon upgrades to choose from in DOOM: The Dark Ages, but the game finally brings with it several new melee options to choose from and upgrade, each with its own specialty uses. To afford these upgrades, you'll need to explore the ever-expansive levels of DOOM: The Dark Ages to find the right currency for the job.
Despite a somewhat rocky launch compared to its predecessors, there's no shortage of valuable weapon upgrades to make killing demons more fun than ever. From devastating melee weapons and upgrades that completely transform how a weapon can be used in combat, The Dark Ages introduces one of my favorite arsenals in the series. Although DOOM: The Dark Ages does a solid job of introducing each currency and upgrade material naturally during gameplay, it can be a bit confusing to keep track of them at first.
Gold Is The Bread And Butter Of Dark Ages' Progression
You'll Earn A Steady Flow Of Gold As You Progress Through The Dark Ages
Gold is easily the most recognizable currency in DOOM: The Dark Ages, used in most of the game's various Sentinel Shrine upgrade options. Thankfully, there's no shortage of gold left behind during the chaotic demon sieges of The Dark Ages, leaving you with only the question of which upgrades to choose first to maximize your slaying efficiency.

Every Weapon in DOOM: The Dark Ages, Ranked
There are 11 unique weapons in DOOM: The Dark Ages. While all of them are fun to use, some are more effective at killing demons than others are.
The Dark Ages also has several mechanics to make finding gold easier, the first of which is the in-game map that highlights collectible gold in yellow before you even come across it. While the unexplored sections of each map can have hidden caches of other supplies, gold is consistently highlighted on the map to encourage more exploration.
Rubies Offer Powerful Upgrades For The Slayer's Arsenal
Requiring Smaller-Scale Puzzles And Quests To Complete
After upgrading a single weapon in DOOM: The Dark Ages, you'll notice that simple gold won't make the cut anymore, but rather a rare Ruby is needed to advance to the next tier. Thankfully, it's not long before you start coming across these items either, as they are easy to spot from a distance thanks to the shiny skeletal statue carrying the pendant you'll need. The tricky part about Rubies is that you will usually need to solve an environmental puzzle or survive a wave of deadly enemies before you can actually reap their rewards.
It's a good habit to thoroughly search each area before moving onto the next
Similar to gold, Rubies can also be seen on the map but often stay hidden until you come across them, reminding you to return later before moving on to the next area. If you do end up missing one, you can always reload the level to search for it again, with The Dark Ages showing a list of all remaining resources for you to discover. With Rubies unlocking some of the more powerful upgrades in The Dark Ages, it's a good habit to thoroughly search each area before moving onto the next, especially to unlock powerful melee weapon upgrades.
Wraithstones Unlock Dark Ages End-Game Upgrades
Unlocking The Full Potential For Your Favorite Weapons
Wraithstones themselves are earned similarly to Rubies in DOOM: The Dark Ages, but often have more challenging requirements to obtain. You can't come across any Wraithstones before the ninth chapter of the game, preventing you from unlocking the end-game upgrades too quickly. With only 11 total Wraithstones available in The Dark Ages, you won't need to collect one to finish off every weapon, but they're more than worth looking out for thanks to the powerful buffs they provide.

I love this one new tweak to the Doom formula in The Dark Ages.
After dropping on Xbox Game Pass last week, I was able to put some hours in on Doom: The Dark Ages over the weekend, and while it is still generally a fast-paced first-person shooter, one tweak to the formula that came with the prequel that I absolutely love is the shield mechanic. While the Doom Slayer's resilience without it was certainly part of the fun of playing the character, I feel as though the shield actually highlights there being something of a challenge to the new game, and makes for some more intriguing combat strategy compared to the classic run-and-gun of the past.
Although Wraithstones unlock some of the most powerful upgrades in The Dark Ages by far, not every buff can be obtained through currency alone. Throughout The Dark Ages, you'll come across a variety of powerful boss demons as well, providing upgrades to your armor, ammo, and health capacity, respectively, after being defeated. Much like the new currencies available, this is a notable change from previous entries, but allows you to focus on exciting weapon upgrades instead of standard survivability options.
