Ruben Amorim is convinced Manchester United won’t need a decade to reclaim the Premier League crown — pushing back against Alex Ferguson’s gloomy timeline.
United haven’t lifted the league since Ferguson signed off as champion in 2013, and the club great recently warned it could take “10 or 11 years" to end the drought.
Amorim isn’t buying it.
“I truly believe we can fight for the title in the next few years," the United boss said. “It’s not going to take that long."
While acknowledging Ferguson’s unmatched understanding of English football, Amorim insisted United’s rebuild is closer to bearing fruit — even if he may not be the manager still in charge when it happens.
United sit sixth heading into Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa, and Amorim also addressed comments from captain Bruno Fernandes, who revealed he had been close to leaving in the summer.
Fernandes stayed after assurances from Amorim, despite feeling hurt by the club’s stance. The United boss played it down, saying the midfielder had simply spoken honestly.
“He gives everything — in every training session and every match," Amorim said. “In that sense, he’s special."
