Minister for Energy Gottipati Ravi Kumar on Monday (January 5) said the Andhra Pradesh government made history by taking the unprecedented step of bearing electricity dues amounting to ₹4,498 crore and reducing tariffs by 13 paise a unit through the true-down mechanism.
The government had announced that power tariffs would not be increased during its five-year term and followed it up by reducing tariffs, he said after inaugurating a 132/33 kV substation, built by A.P.-Transco at Gannavaram airport at ₹30 crore.
Mr. Ravi Kumar said the YSRCP government repeatedly increased power tariffs and resorted to unscientific power purchases, burdening the public exchequer. The coalition government, however, took corrective steps in a transparent manner.
The Minister said the government was implementing a solar rooftop programme, under which a subsidy of ₹78,000, along with an additional ₹20,000, was being given to eligible BC beneficiaries, while SC and ST beneficiaries were being provided solar rooftop systems for free.
He added that tenders under PM Surya Ghar Scheme were being taken up well before the onset of summer. Chief Secretary and Special CS (Energy) K. Vijayanand said the new substation would provide quality, round-the-clock power to the airport and significantly reduce the load on the existing Ganguru substation. It would also serve as a second power source for the airport.
MLA Yarlagadda Venkata Rao, A.P.-Transco joint managing director G. Surya Sai Praveenchand, directors A.K.V. Bhaskar, J.V. Rao and N.V. Ramana Murthy were among those present.
