U-Boat Worx Super Sub to Be Fastest Personal Submersible Ever Built

Although 9 knots isn’t terribly swift by most accounts, it’s a remarkable speed for a personal sub. It’s also faster than a bottlenose dolphin usually swims underwater. In a few weeks’ time, the first U-Boat Worx Super Sub will be taking its owners on remarkable journeys at this speed. This makes it not just the company’s quickest sub, but also the fastest personal submersible on the market.

Having recently undergone sea trials and testing, the first unit has also achieved safety approval from DNV. Since its inception 20 years ago, U-Boat Worx has built all of its deliveries to the classification society’s standards. Regardless of passenger count or depth rating, the company’s engineers involve DNV surveyors in the design, construction, and sea trials.

Carrying three people, including a pilot, the U-Boat Worx Super Sub can reach depths to 984 feet (300 meters). This is within the ocean’s twilight zone, where sunlight can no longer reach. It doesn’t mean you can’t see anything, however, since bioluminescent organisms swim in this zone. The sub’s wide acrylic viewing hull lets you keep an eye out for them nearly all around.

Your pilot, meanwhile, has good maneuverability at his or her fingertips. The Super Sub is capable of traveling at up to 45-degree inclines and declines, for instance. This is helpful when encountering naturally steep ocean structures. Sonar links into the operations, too, automatically scanning the ocean floor and adjusting the route when descending. Once the sub reaches the maximum depth, the sonar then levels out the craft.

Cruising along underwater in search of extraordinary fish, coral, and more is a big reason why megayacht owners buy personal subs, of course. The U-Boat Worx Super Sub strives to deliver the fun with 1,000 kW of horizontal thrust. The maximum speed of 9 knots lets you ride alongside a cluster of fish, groups of sea turtles, or a dolphin pod. According to the company, the performance exceeds that of other personal sub manufacturers by a few knots.

“The Super Sub represents a major leap forward in personal submersible capability,” Wilbert Beilsma, U-Boat Worx’s commercial director, says. “We’re entering a new chapter where private owners can explore the ocean at speeds once thought impossible.”

Besides taking orders for further Super Subs, U-Boat Worx is allowing customers to lease the sub to accompany their superyacht, through its new Wet Lease program.
