Sinn Féin is standing over comments by its finance spokesman, Pearse Doherty, linking the withdrawal of cost-of-living payments to Ireland’s support for Ukraine, which have drawn sharp criticism.

Mr Doherty’s comments during a Dáil motion on approving Ireland’s participation in the EU’s €90bn loan to the war-torn country has left his party open to charges of “blatant populism” and being “soft on Russia”.
