Designing for dementia requires a fundamentally different way of thinking about architecture and interior design; it is about understanding how the brain processes light, contrast, sound and spatial cues. At Loveday Belgravia, the building has been designed to reduce cognitive load.
From subtle shifts in colour and texture that define distinct zones, to discreetly considered handrails, every element has been considered through the lens of how people with age-related conditions and physical impairments experience space. These integrated features offer discreet support without interrupting the visual language of the interiors and guide movement through the building, providing subtle cues that aid confidence and orientation, particularly for those living with dementia. The result is a residence where clinical excellence is embedded into the fabric of the building, made possible by meticulous, purpose-built design rather than added retrospectively.
Natural light also plays a central role; suites, dining rooms and shared spaces are carefully planned to maximise daylight while advanced glazing manages privacy and temperature. Acoustic monitoring allows care teams to respond to sound rather than presence, enabling Members to rest undisturbed, particularly at night, while ensuring that support is available immediately if needed. Combined with carefully selected materials that manage sound absorption, the system allows monitoring to take place discreetly, without introducing visual or sensory intrusion into private spaces.

Innovation extends beyond aesthetics. Smart lighting adjusts throughout the day to support circadian rhythms, while fabrics and finishes are selected for durability, hygiene and long-term performance without sacrificing elegance. Behind the scenes, bespoke
joinery conceals clinical infrastructure, allowing spaces to remain adaptable as Members’ needs evolve.
Cocktail lounges, studios and dining spaces feel refined and residential, yet are engineered to support a wide range of uses, from creative work to social gatherings. Outdoor terraces provide additional space for dining, relaxation and entertaining, extending life beyond the interior.
This commitment to design-led innovation has earned industry recognition. Loveday Belgravia was shortlisted for Best Architectural Design at the Healthcare Design Awards and awarded Best Retirement Home by WhatHouse.
