Dark finishes, slick surface textures, top-shelf parts, and aggressive proportions are all key ingredients of a Rough Crafts custom Harley. But what if you took this tried-and-true recipe and cranked it up to eleven?
That was Rough Crafts frontman Winston Yeh's goal when the commission for this custom 2022 Harley-Davidson Softail Fat Boy hit his desk. The request was for a Harley street tracker in Rough Craft's signature style, with the caveat that everything had to be “over the top.” Winston immediately had a plan—and it started with the bike's tires.
“When Harley launched the Sportster S back in 2021, it was special that The Motor Co. had put out a tracker-influenced, fat-tired bike with a lot of 'custom' influence into production,” he explains. “But for me, the most eye-catching part was the tires.”
“Rough Crafts is known for beefy-looking custom Harleys, but a tire is one thing we can't really produce ourselves—we can only use what's available. The factory tires on the Sportster S are the only tires out there that are both fat and sporty-looking.”
Winston's referring to the Dunlop GT503—a tire developed specifically for the Sporster S with plenty of girth and ample sidewall. He ordered a set in the Sportster's OEM sizes (160/70R17 at the front and 180/70R16 at the rear), matching them to ultra-wide carbon fiber wheels from BST.
The rest of the running gear is standard Rough Crafts fare. Burly Öhlins forks are gripped by Rough Crafts yokes, while an Öhlins shock hides out back. Four-piston Beringer calipers handle stopping duties, with Beringer discs mounted on custom-made carriers.
Moving to the bodywork, Winston commissioned his go-to fabricator, JZO Crafts, to build a fuel tank with Rough Crafts' traditional scalloped design. The matching tail section is from the Rough Crafts parts catalog; it's a plug-and-play part for modern Harley Softails.
Next, Winston designed a low and lean cockpit with Rough Crafts handlebars and risers. The bars wear Rebuffini switches that work with the Harley's CAN-bus system, plus grips from the Rough Crafts x Arlen Ness collection. The risers house a slim digital speedo, lifted from the H-D Street Bob.
A Rough Crafts headlight sits up front, while Rough Crafts x Koso LED turn signals and taillights complete the lighting setup. The foot pegs and gas cap are from the Rough Crafts store, the rocker covers and intake are RC x Arlen Ness items, and the hydraulic clutch housing is from Rebuffini. A belligerently short exhaust system completes the list.
Winston called on more of his collaborators to get the bike over the finish line. SFC Simon Fiber Craft laid down the bodywork's checkered carbon fiber veneers, Rover Custom Works Paint handled the black finishes and gold- and silver-leaf striping, and 2 Abnormal Sides stepped up with a set of tank badges and pushrod collars. Triroad Moto Co. was responsible for putting everything together.
Aptly named Dominus Torque, this menacing Harley not only rides the line between a street tracker and a bobber masterfully, but it also amplifies everything we love about Rough Crafts' inimitable vibe.
