Porsche Mulling a Merger of the Panamera and Taycan Model Lines, Report Claims

Porsche waited more than half a century to enter the sedan market with the first Panamera, but it took less than a decade to expand its offerings with a second four-door. That all-electric Taycan has coexisted with the internal combustion Panamera ever since its 2019 debut. With the next generation of both sedans fast approaching, however, the current circumstances could change by the time either of Porsche's sleek four-doors sees a successor.

Autocar is reporting that Porsche is considering a merger of the two sedans into one model line. That would not mean an end to either electric or internal combustion sedan production at Porsche, according to the report—it would just mean that the two lines would share a name and a basic market position going forward.

Porsche does something similar with the Cayenne, which can currently be had as an internal combustion or electric car. Those two models are built on different platforms and styled very differently, but both are sold by Porsche's dealers around the world under the same badge. The same thing is currently happening with the new all-electric Macan and its long-lived internal combustion predecessor, which is still available in some markets.

The report claims that Porsche has not decided if the Panamera or Taycan name would win out in this scenario. It also does not clarify if Porsche would unite the two cars under one common platform, although it does suggest that such a move would be a change of plans from the current roadmap for either four-door performance line. The next Panamera and/or Taycan should debut closer to the end of the decade, so we fully expect this decision to be be made in the near future.
