How Upgrading Gear Works in Ghost of Yotei Legends

After completing a few missions in Ghost of Yotei Legends, players will start collecting a variety of weapons and gear pieces with different rarities. Upgrading works differently in this mode compared to the base game, as Legends uses a rarity and gear score system that determines when equipment can be improved. Instead of waiting for higher rarity drops, players can upgrade weapons they like using materials earned from missions and activities.

To begin upgrading, head to the hub area and walk toward the floating rocks. Interact with the rock on the right, select the gear you want to improve, and press Square to open the upgrade menu. From there, you can increase Ki, improve the gear’s rarity, or reroll its attributes depending on its current quality.

Once you unlock the ability to upgrade a gear piece, pressing Square opens the upgrade screen, where you will see three to four different options depending on the rarity of the item.

The first option increases the gear’s Ki by 1. For example, if the item is Rare, this upgrade typically requires two of the three crafting materials associated with that rarity. Increasing Ki helps you meet a higher Gear Score.

The second option upgrades the rarity or quality of the gear. This requires all three crafting materials if the gear is above Rare and becomes available once the item reaches the required gear score threshold. The third option allows you to reroll the weapon’s property, while the fourth option rerolls the perk attached to that item. These reroll options are only available once the gear reaches Epic quality or higher.

You might notice that the upgrade button is locked for some items early in the game. This is because certain upgrades require a minimum Gear Score. For example, upgrading gear from Uncommon to Rare requires 40 Gear Score, while upgrading from Rare to Epic requires 80 Gear Score, with higher tiers requiring even more.

If you run low on upgrade materials, there are several ways to obtain more. You can complete daily bounties, finish challenge modifiers in story missions starting from Silver difficulty, or dismantle gear you no longer need to recover materials.

Increasing a gear piece’s Ki level is most useful when you have a weapon with strong perks or properties that you want to keep using instead of replacing with a higher rarity drop.
