Ireland fans called out over abuse aimed at players after Czechia loss

Some Ireland supporters are being called out by fellow fans over abuse aimed at Heimir Hallgrímsson's players following Thursday's defeat to Czechia.

The Boys in Green lost on penalties after the hosts came from two goals down to take the game to extra-time.

Mojmír Chytil had his penalty saved from Caoimhin Kelleher, but Finn Azaz and Alan Browne were then both denied by Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

A number of comments taking aim at Ireland players were shared on social media following the match, with other fans pleading with those posting them to stop.

One said: "Don’t abuse our players, I’m absolutely sure they are going through enough as it is. Can only imagine how it feels. Gave us a memorable run and some great performances. Gave it their all, just not meant to be on the night. Thanks lads, very proud to be Irish."

Someone else wrote: "The abuse & ridiculous comments towards the Ireland team are very petty. It just shows we have a big issue with manners & lack of respect judging by the abusive comments. Some lads thinking they are great name calling on social media."

Another comment read: "Any fans throwing abuse at players need to give their head a serious wobble. 120+ mins of football played… people need to have a bit of perspective. Everyone is heartbroken, now is not the time to be digging players out…"

Meanwhile, Troy Parrott told fans to stick with the national team following Thursday's heartbreaking defeat.

"We felt the support all week," he told RTE. "We knew how much it meant to everyone. I'm just really, really gutted that we couldn't do it for everyone who was supporting us.

"All of the Irish that were here, all of the Irish that were supporting us back home, thank you, stick with us.

"It’s times like this where I’m so, so happy where I come from.

"We just said in the changing room that now is the time to stick together as a group because we have some really good players. We’ll be back for sure."
