Derry man who kicked officer to the head given suspended sentence

A man has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates’ Court for assaulting and resisting police.

David Knight (48) of Melmore Gardens admitted three charges relating to an incident on January 8.

The court was told a police mobile patrol came upon an altercation involving several males.

They detained Knight who began to resist and had to be taken to the ground and in the course of this he kicked one officer to the head.

Police used CS spray and Knight continued to shout and resist.

Defence counsel Sean Doherty said ‘thankfully' no one was injured.

He said his client had been assaulted by a group of men and when police tried to de-escalate the situation Knight became involved.

The barrister said Knight had shown 'genuine remorse'.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said that while it was not the most serious case police had a difficult enough job without this sort of behaviour.

Knight was sentenced to 4 months suspended for 12 months.
