Christopher Jackson says Sinn Féin warned of planned attack on Derry office by dissident republicans over Easter

Sinn Féin’s Christopher Jackson has said the party has been warned of a planned attack on one of its Derry offices by dissident republicans over the Easter weekend.

The party’s Council Group Leader on Derry City and Strabane District Council said on Friday that the party will take the threat seriously but will not be ‘deterred’ by it.

Colr. Jackson commented: “The PSNI have relayed to Sinn Féin that it has information that so-called dissident republicans are planning an attack on one of our party offices in Derry over Easter.

“While we obviously have to take this seriously, we will in no way be deterred by such threats.

“Neither will the irony be lost on the people of Derry that these people, who claim to be republicans, are plotting an attack on the one party which is actually leading the drive towards a new and United Ireland. Perhaps that says more about their real motivations and who is directing them.”

The Sinn Féin councillor did not provide any further details about the warning the party had received.

He said: “The people of Derry see these gangs for what they really are because they see the criminality, the extortion, the thuggery and the anti-community activity they are engaged in on a daily basis.

“They should drop the pretence of being republicans. They should get off the backs of the community and they should let those of us who are serious about the business of reuniting our country get on with it.”
