Urgent manhunt launched after convicted rapist escapes custody in western Sydney

A manhunt has been launched in western Sydney for a convicted sexual offender after he fled from hospital.

Michael Angok, 30, was being transported by authorities from Villawood Immigration Detention Centre to Bankstown Hospital on Wednesday morning.

However, police said he escaped on foot shortly after 9.30am.

Angok, who was last seen wearing a black hooded jumper, grey tracksuit and white 'croc' sandals, was convicted of sexual assault in 2014.

It followed allegations he had taken part in a gang rape, The Daily Telegraph reports, and was sentenced to prison with a minimum non-parole period of two years.

He was released in 2017 and then reportedly held at the detention centre for several years.

After Angok fled on Wednesday, police were notified and established a perimeter at the scene.

Officers, assisted by specialist resources including Raptor Squad, PolAir and the dog unit, have been searching the area.

Police said a number of personal items were located discarded on Gallipoli Road during the search. But Michael has not been found.

He previously lived in the Blacktown area and officers have suggested he may use public transport.

As the search continues, anyone who sees Michael is urged not to approach him but to contact Triple Zero immediately.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
