The Murder of Denis DonaldsonDenis Donaldson was a revered and much-loved IRA hero, who helped guide Sinn Fein through the peace process and worked at the heart of the first power sharing government in the North. So, when he outed himself as an MI5 spy in December 2005, it rocked the Republican movement to its core - those who knew him described him as the man least likely to turn tout. After confessing to being a paid agent for the British forces, Donaldson immediately went into hiding but was tracked down three months later by a Sunday World journalist. Within two weeks he was dead, his body found in the remote Donegal cottage where he’d been living with his wife. Antoin Duffy, also known as Anton, a 39-year-old from Kincasslagh in Co Donegal was recently extradited from Scotland, where he was serving a prison sentence, and was charged with murdering Donaldson. His case is expected to be heard later this year.
