A man is due to be sentenced later this month over a hit-and-run collision in Co Meath last year which resulted in the death of an elderly cyclist, an inquest has heard.Edward McLoughlin (80) from Doolistown, Trim, Co Meath, sustained fatal injuries when knocked off his bicycle by a vehicle which failed to remain at the scene on September 12, 2025.The victim, who was known as “Ned”, was discovered in an unresponsive state on a road in Batterstown, Ballivor, Co Meath at around 10am.He was brought by ambulance to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown in Dublin where he was pronounced dead a short time later. On the day of the incident, gardaí issued a public appeal for information about the collision in which they stated they were particularly interested in the movement of heavy goods vehicles in the area at the time.At the opening of an inquest into Mr Mc Loughlin’s death at Dublin District Coroner’s Court, his partner, Thelma O’Connell, gave evidence of formally identifying the deceased’s body to gardaí.Ms O’Connell said she had been driven to the hospital by her partner’s niece after gardaí had notified her that he had been involved in a collision.Inspector Patrick Smyth applied for an adjournment of the inquest under Section 25 (2) of the Coroners Act on the basis that criminal proceedings in the case have already been initiated.Insp Smyth informed the coroner, Cróna Gallagher, that a suspect who had been arrested in the case is due to be sentenced for a related offence later this month.A male in his 40s was charged before a sitting of Trim District Court on September 18, 2025 in relation to the fatal incident.A vehicle believed to have been involved in the collision was also recovered.Dr Gallagher granted the application and adjourned the inquest without fixing a date for its resumption to allow finalisation of the related criminal proceedings.
