Woman who told another woman ‘I will batter you’ sentenced at Derry Magistrate's Court

A woman who told another woman ‘I will batter you’ has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court for putting her in fear of assault.

Cherish Devine (30) of Abercorn Road admitted charges of assault and criminal damage on April 22.

Police were called by staff at a supported accommodation, asking them to remove Devine.

They were told Devine entered a common dining area and approached another woman telling her 'when I get you I will batter you.'

She moved towards this woman, putting her in fear of assault.

After being arrested Devine pulled the handle off a police vehicle door.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said his client was sentenced to immediate custody in June 2025 and there had been nothing since then.

He said there had been no actual physical assault, just the threat of it, and the £250 handle damage had been accidental.

Devine was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for two years and ordered to pay £250 compensation.
