Jim Harbaugh, Mike McDaniel Should Scoop Up This Star WR

Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel are scheming for the Los Angeles Chargers to have a booming offense during the 2026-27 season, but there are still some roster gaps left to fill.

One of the few star wide receivers left in free agency is Deebo Samuel, who spent last season with the Washington Commanders and his previous NFL time with the 49ers.

Harbaugh and McDaniel are looking to make a statement this season, and adding Samuel would absolutely boost their offensive power and lineup. Plus, even though Samuel is one of the more expensive free agents still available, Los Angeles has the third-most cap space in the NFL at $45.8 million, according to Over the Cap, so they could easily pay his going rate.

Matt Okada of the NFL's official website also sees Samuel as a boost to the Chargers' lineup. He notes that tie between Samuel and McDaniel.

Deebo Samuel #1 of the Washington Commanders

"The most productive season of Samuel's career, by far, came with the 49ers in 2021," Okada states. "He logged career highs in receptions (77), receiving yards (1,405) and yards per catch (18.2), plus a game-breaking 365 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns."

He adds: "The offensive coordinator in San Fran that season? Mike McDaniel ... under the tutelage of Kyle Shanahan, of course. McDaniel's now the man in L.A. This reunion could be electric -- pun intended -- for both Samuel and the Bolts."

Samuel appeared in 16 games for the Commanders during the 2025-26 season, and his impressive showing was largely clouded by the team's run of losses. But, injuries are what held Washington back during the season, and if anything, it just proves that Samuel could be an even bigger force surrounded by healthy players.
