President Donald Trump's approval rating continues to slide among those who voted for him in the 2024 presidential election, a new survey from the Pew Research Center shows on Friday, but his team remains unfazed, telling Newsweek, in part, “The ultimate poll was November 5th 2024 when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda."
The president's approval rating among the group is 78 percent in the latest poll, down from 83 percent in January and 95 percent early in his second term.
Why It MattersEbbing support within a president’s own party can possibly depress turnout, complicate legislative agendas, and endanger down-ballot candidates.
Previous surveys have also found that Trump's job approval ratings have fallen, including those on the economy, potentially hurting the Republican Party's chances of keeping both congressional chambers in the upcoming midterms this year.
Trump has also landed record or near‑record lows among key voting blocs, including Gen Z and independent voters, potentially compounding headwinds for the White House and GOP amid public concern over the cost of living and the war with Iran.
What To Know According to the poll, the president's overall approval rating is 34 percent versus a 64 percent disapproval rating. This is "the lowest mark of his second term. He has also lost ground across a variety of personal attributes and issue areas," the survey notes.
The poll was conducted among 5,103 U.S. adults from April 20 to April 26, 2026, with a margin of error of 1.6 percent.
The president has only ever received one lower approval rating with the pollster, and that was in a survey from January 8 to January 12, 2021, following the Capitol insurrection in Washington, D.C.
The survey also shows that 57 percent of Trump voters under 35 years old, along with 70 percent of those aged 30 to 49, approve of how the president is handling his job. This is a noticeable contrast to those 50 years old and up who voted for Trump, who approve by 87 percent.
Hispanic Trump voters approve of the job the president is doing by 66 percent, and 81 percent of white Trump voters approve as well. "Trump’s approval rating among his Hispanic voters has declined 27 points since early 2025, compared with a 14-point drop among his White voters," the poll says in part.
White House Spokesman Davis Ingle told Newsweek on Friday that, “The ultimate poll was November 5th 2024 when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda. No other President in history has accomplished more for the American people than President Trump, who is working tirelessly to create jobs, cool inflation, increase housing affordability, and more. The President has already made historic progress not only in America but around the world, and this is just the beginning as his agenda continues taking effect.”
