Watch as Keir Starmer faces questions from MPs over Mandelson vetting scandal
Keir Starmer has claimed the evidence of former foreign office civil servant Sir Olly Robbins "puts to bed all the allegations levelled at me".
Speaking during PMQs on Wednesday, Starmer said Robbins had been clear in his testimony to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee that he did not feel under pressure to waive through Peter Mandelson's security clearance.
"Sir Olly Robbins could not have been clearer in his evidence yesterday," said Starmer, referring to the man he sacked as Permanent Under-Secretary, the most senior civil service post at the foreign office.
Starmer continued: "He said this, ‘I didn’t feel under pressure personally in terms of my judgments’, he went on to say ‘I have complete confidence that recommendations to me and the discussions we had and the decision we made were rigorously independent of any pressure.'"
The prime minister's interpretation of evidence appears to contradict parts of what Robbins told MPs on Tuesday.
