By the spring of 2022, Russian forces had withdrawn from much of the north and halted their southern advances, focusing on capturing the Donbas region. Ukrainian forces, entrenched since 2014, are holding strong in Luhansk and Donetsk.
Russia aims to encircle and destroy them by advancing from Izyum, Donetsk, and Luhansk, with the goal of capturing Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. The key obstacle is Bakhmut, the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the 21st century, which pushed Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin to his breaking point.
