A major clean-up operation has begun in Oxfordshire to remove an estimated 21,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste left behind by criminal gangs.

The Environment Agency says specialist contractors from Acumen Waste Services Ltd will shift up to 30 lorry loads a day, removing commercial and household waste including tyres, shredded plastic and general rubbish.

The £8m operation is expected to take around six months, as campaigners branded the site an 'environmental catastrophe.'
