December 2024 saw the collapse of a five-decade dynasty in Syria when Sunni Islamist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a lightning offensive, overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Now, HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has promised to build a peaceful and united Syria. But Syria is not united at all.

Nearly a third of the country remains part of Rojava, an autonomous Kurdish-led region in Syria’s northeast. Elsewhere, pro-Assad militias, foreign-backed factions and ISIS sleeper cells all have their own stakes in this fragmented battleground. So, is this the beginning of a new Syria, or just the prelude to another devastating war?
