Chancellor Rachel Reeves has branded the war in Iran a "mistake", in some of the strongest words from the government opposing the conflict to date.

Speaking at an event with journalists in Washington on Wednesday, the Chancellor said she was unconvinced the war had made the world a safer place and echoed the prime minister's frustration over its impact on household bills in the UK.

“The question is not whether you like or dislike the Iranian regime – I strongly dislike the Iranian regime – but how to achieve the change that you want to achieve," Reeves said.

She went on to add that Iran did not currently have a nuclear weapon and the best way to prevent the Tehran regime from getting one was through diplomacy rather than conflict.
