US secretary of state Marco Rubio has highlighted the plight of thousands of mariners from different countries stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.
He framed Washington's "Project Freedom" - the effort to get ships through the waterway - as a "rescue" attempt.
Rubio added: "It's to rescue almost 23,000 civilians from 87 different countries that are trapped inside of the Gulf and left for dead, by this Iranian regime."
