6 Sony Cameras That Have Captivated Photographers
The renewed interest in older cameras has taken a fascinating turn. In some cases, we see cameras launched five years ago being searched for online, then there are some instances where you see devices that are older than a decade gaining traction. The reason for this could range from needing a specific look for one’s work to social media trends reviving the cool aesthetics. Either way, over the past week, we have seen a few Sony cameras constantly pop up on Google Trends, before they are forgotten for other models. Here is a look at a few older Sony models that still interest photographers even today. Sony a900Sony a900Now, on our most iconic cameras by Sony list, the a900 was the first true full-frame flagship camera from the company for professional photographers. Launched in 2008, the device has a 24MP CMOS sensor, a 3-inch 921,600-dot LCD screen, and a 0.74× viewfinder. The camera had an ISO up to 6400, 9 autofocus points, and a Sony/Minolta lens mount. The camera could shoot 5fps continuously, and it just weighed 885g.Sony a6500Sony a6500A notch above the a6300, the a6500 comes with a 24MP APS-C sensor, a 2.36 m-dot viewfinder, and a 3.0-inch 921.6k-dot LCD. There is also UHD 4K video and S-Log3 Gamma, 5-axis image stabilisation, 425 autofocus points, and 11fps of continuous shooting capability. What we liked about the camera was its fast autofocus, great feel in hand, great image quality up to ISO25,600, and it is compact. It’s a camera that beginners and serious enthusiasts can opt for on a budget. Sony a37Sony a37Over a decade old camera, the a37 is one Sony’s devices which features an SLT system, one that removes the optical viewfinder for an electronic one and therefore also sticks with a translucent mirror. The device is designed for beginningers, offering a 16MP sensor, 15 autofocus points, a3-inch 230000-dot LCD, and ISO up to 16000. It comes with a 18-55 mm kit lens, and can also record videos. The overall image quality is great, and it will work best with prime lenses with fast aperture. However, this camera is better for those who want to shoot on auto mode, than play with exposure. Sony a77 Mk IISony a77 Mk IIIn many ways, the a77 Mk II is similar to the a99 when it comes to performance. It features the same 24.3MP sensor as the a99, and also comes with the SLT technology, a 3-inch 1,228k-dot LCD, and a 0.5-inch 2,359k-dot viewfinder. It has 79 autofocus points, ISO up to 25,600, 12fps of continuous shooting speed, and HD video recording at up to 60fps. The image quality and RAW file versatility have been great, and so is the autofocus. As we pointed out in our review: “If you’re full-frame shooter, this would make a great companion camera. Yet, if full-frame is above your budget, this would make a great primary camera, as it has everything you could possibly need and a stellar kit lens to boot. This is a great choice for photojournalists just starting out, as well as concert, event, and portrait photographers.”Sony NEX 5RSony NEX 5RA successor of NEX 5N, the NEX 5R has a 16MP sensor, has 99 autofocus points, a 3-inch 921,600-dot LCD, and ISO up to 25,600. The camera is perfect for enthusiasts or anyone who wants a simple camera that provides good results. “The 5R has a simpler interface due to the touchscreen (providing your unit’s screen works perfectly),” we said in the review. “It also has very fast focusing capabilities, WiFi connectivity built in, and ergonomic exposure control dials that make shooting a breeze.” The image quality and the colors are fantastic too. Sony A7 IVSony a7 IVThe 33MP full-frame camera is perfect for animal, bird, and human face detection. The A7 IV has a 15-stop dynamic range, 828 continuous RAW+JPEG shooting, 759 phase-detection AF points, and a 4k/60p record option. It also has 10-bit depth, 4:2:2 color sampling, S-Cineton and Creative Look, and real-time AF and tracking. Overall, the camera offers in-camera skin softening, a good OLED screen, a better menu, and weather sealing. “The a7 IV is a great hybrid camera with capabilities that will entice a variety of photographers and videographers,” as we said.
