Fujifilm Half Frame Could Appeal to Film Photographers

Fujifilm may have another exciting feature for the upcoming half frame camera, the X-Half, as it goes by for now. The reports of a 1-inch sensor camera have been afloat for a while, with different specifications coming to light every other week. And now, it seems like the new camera may appeal to people who like to shoot film. How so? Well, scroll down to find out.According to a report from Fuji Rumors, the new X-Half is said to have introduced a new concept. Currently, there is no name for it, but the report calls it “film roll mode.” So, how does it work? Well, the said feature is a mode that is enabled and will “not allow you to change settings or see pictures before you reach a certain number of pictures.” For instance, shooting 36 frames. The report calls it a film-like shooting experience, since one can’t review or preview the images instantly, and has to swap rolls before continuing to make new images. As we had stated before, the Fujifilm X-Half sounds like a Leica, and with the new shooting mode, it also reminds one of the Leica M-D, launched in 2016. The M-D is a digital camera that gives photographers a film-like shooting experience, as it lacks an LCD. Instead of the screen, you have an ISO dial at the back. It gives one a great experience to experience what it feels like shooting with an analogue camera, but getting digital results. Even Camp Snap, a point-and-shoot camera for kids, has similar features. So, what Fujifilm is trying is not new, but could be an extension of what we are already seeing in the market. Leica M-D’s backThis is certainly something else. The report has divided people, as many presume this is just another gimmick by the company to sell more X-series cameras. However, this is exactly what will trend on TikTok and Instagram, leading many younger people to opt for it. The boom of X100VI is another example: Create a camera that is retro-looking and compact, with a few added features, and there is a whole generation that will buy it at twice the price. Not photographers, but masses that need ‘trendy’ cameras that they can show-off.In the same vein, the Fujifilm half-frame may use the same logic and make the device so different that people who have never used film will try to grab it. So far, the reported features include a vertical LCD, the ability to create diptychs, a small sensor, and dials. However, whether a serious photographer will buy it depends on how good these features are and the lens with which the camera will be launched. At the moment, whatever we see makes it appear like it will be for the content creator crowd, just like the new X-M5. It is, thus, clear that the X series will cater to the beginner crowd, with the GFX models more focused on serious or professional photographers. It is also possible that Fujifilm will change its tactics, but with how they are going, we won’t see much of a difference anytime soon. Either way, keep an eye out for more revelations of the half frame. The launch of the device is set for May 22, 7am Berlin time.
