Canon Reportedly To Work On Two Ultra Fast Lenses
Ultra-fast apertures such as f0.95, f1.2, and f1.4 are essential for various users. They not only give you exceptional bokeh and depth of field but also help you shoot great images in really low light. This way, you don’t have to push your ISO to extreme ends and get pleasing results. Per new reports, Canon is working on two different lenses, one a patent, and another, a lens that may launch soon. Here is a look at both. A ‘World’s First’ Ultra-Wide PrimeCanon Rumors states that Canon is finally listening to astrophotographers, who wanted a fast ultra-wide-angle prime. The details about the lens’ focal range are not yet disclosed, but it is expected to be a f1.4, which is pretty great. Canon RF 10-20mm F4LWhile there are plenty of patents and designs in the past, it now appears that Canon may be launching one such lens. This won’t be a VCM lens, but is expected to have an STM motor. However, while the STM motor has reduced its size over the years, the new lens could not be small in size. Furthermore, the report adds that the lens may rely on software for optical corrections, but that could work in favour of some photographers. In the past, Canon has launched three ultra-wide fast-aperture lenses. For instance, the EF 14mm f2.8L USM and its second version. There was also the EF 15mm f2.8 Fisheye, and lately, the EF 8-15mm f4L USM zoom fisheye in 2011. Quite recently, they also released the 10-20mm, but it featured an f4 aperture. In fact, we liked the new version so much that we gave it five out of five stars. “It embraces distortion, but in a way that helps to tell stories,” we wrote about the 10-20mm f4. “It also gives us lens character, color, and depth that is hard to get from many other lenses. It’s a lens for people that don’t want to pixel peep just to compare lenses.” So, with another ultra-wide-angle lens, our hope is that the company continues to drive innovation forward. An Ultra-Fast 24mm LensCanon 24mm f0.7 patentIn another report, Canon Rumors shared a patent filed by Canon in March 2025. Titled JP 2025-040484, the patent aims to develop a new “wide and fast” lens, the 24mm f0.7. While the company has filed multiple such patents, the size and weight have become a challenge. You get one and then you lose the other. However, with the new patent, Canon aims to overcome this shortcoming with a new, compact 24mm lens. However, with a lens of f0.7 aperture, there are several challenges. For instance, issues of field curvature, focus breathing, back focus distance, and aberrations are some issues that the lens will face. However, the patent states that the problems should be resolved, at least on paper. However, producing the lens is a whole different ball game. However, if Canon manages to achieve this feat, it will be another innovation in Canon’s hall of fame. For both photos and videos, this lens will open up multiple avenues. It gives photographers the much-needed brightness for low-light shots, while making it extremely pleasing and cinematic. Overall, both lenses may prove that Canon is a serious innovator. However, we aren’t sure when the lenses will launch. So, it is better to wait and watch.
