Sigma May Launch an Industry First Lens This Summer

Sigma recently announced the BF camera, a sleek-looking device with a minimalist approach. In addition, the company introduced two zoom lenses: the 16-300mm f3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary and the 300-600mm f4 G OS Sports. With over 50 lenses in its varied series, Sigma is pushing forward to have a wider range to help photographers working across genres. It now appears the company is reportedly creating a new telephoto lens, which will help wildlife photographers. According to Andrea Pizzini of Sony Alpha Rumors, Sigma is working on two different lenses this time, for Sony E and Leica L-mounts. Per the video uploaded by the creator, the company is gearing up to launch a new 200mm lens with an f2 aperture. The initial report stated a f1.8 lens, but that was an error. So far, no other company has launched a 200mm f2 for mirrorless mount. However, Canon did launch the Canon EF 200mm f2L IS USM in 2008, but it was for DLSRs. It was also quite heavy and massive, weighing 2,520g and measuring 1.9m. Plus, it is quite expensive. On eBay, you will get this for up to $4000. Nikon also launched the Nikon 200 f2 VR in 2004, which also weighed 2.93kg. The lens can go up to $2000 today. As both lenses showed us, the weight plays a significant factor here. And so, Sigma’s 200mm f2 will have to redefine the standard. Sigma 500mm f4 DG OS HSM SportsSources close to the publication stated the lens will be announced before summer, and pre-orders will begin in June, with shipments to follow in July. At the moment, the only detail we know is that the lens will be compact, 20cm or less, and likely to be in the Sports category instead of Art, so the price is far more affordable. At the moment, the expected price is around $2,500. However, with tariffs included, the final price for the US may be slightly higher. The report states that Sigma may work on another fast lens in addition to the 200 mm f2. We aren’t sure whether this will be a prime lens or a telephoto zoom. But looking at their prime telephoto lenses, the company has the space to expand them. Sigma has some good offers in its lineup. In fact, we have tested many prime lenses from the company, which are now part of a guide. Our latest review of Sigma was the 14mm f1.4 Art. As we stated in our review: “In a market where technical superiority is placed on a pedestal, this lens can still add some character with beautiful flare and perspective distortion. And then, of course, there’s the bokeh boost of that wider aperture, which is further bolstered by the ability to focus a foot from the front of the lens.”However, we aren’t sure whether Sigma can make a compact version since the company is known for making bigger lenses in general. As we stated previously, the company’s philosophy changed over time, resulting in lenses that could have worked better with medium-format cameras. We will only know how different the newer lenses are once we get better updates on the 200mm f2. Keep an eye out.
