Get ready to see Peter Jackson's trilogy in a new way
Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy is returning to movie theaters — in Extended Edition form, no less — in 2026 for a two-weekend event, Warner Bros. and Fathom Events announced Friday. And this time, fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's work will be able to immerse themselves in the action with D-Box technology. Just imagine being thrown around like an oliphaunt rider for four-plus hours while you soak in Return of the King in 4DX.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring's release in movie theaters, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King will hit the big screen on Jan. 16-18 and Jan. 23-25, 2026. Keep in mind that if you want to enjoy the D-Box Extended Edition versions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, you'll need to do so on the first weekend. Tickets for those screenings are on sale now, and it appears that Fathom will spread the trilogy across three days; meaning you won't be able to sit in the theater for 11 hours straight for maximum butt-numbing enjoyment. (You can always do that at home.)
Of course, there will be new merch to accompany the 25th anniversary rerelease of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. That includes new "limited-edition concession vessels" that are Middle-earth themed. At participating AMC Theaters, Lord of the Rings fans can consume popcorn out of objects like a collectible map tin with a quest magnet set, while moviegoers at Regal and independent theaters can purchase The Lord of the Rings Trilogy “One Ring” design vessels. See below.
To pass the time between now and mid-January, you can always catch up on Polygon's The Year of the Ring, a full year's worth of collected stories about the making, reception, and legacy of Peter Jackson's groundbreaking adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. (It's also available in real book form.) Or you can simply watch the short 25th anniversary hype trailer for next year's re-release below.
