The chill has been creeping in from across the Atlantic too, ever since Washington began sending strange signals about Greenland.
You’d think the story of a far-off icy island wouldn’t raise Brussels’ blood pressure – yet here we are.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and therefore part of NATO. So, when President Donald Trump floated the idea of “taking over” Greenland, it wasn’t just eccentric talk. It struck at the very heart of the Alliance.
The sacred Article 5 of NATO says that an attack on one is an attack on all. It has been invoked only once, after the September 11 attacks. But, if one NATO ally were to go after another, it would mark the first existential crisis in the alliance’s history.
