Republic of Ireland's O'Sullivan signs for Liverpool

Republic of Ireland midfielder Denise O'Sullivan has joined WSL side Liverpool, subject to international clearance. The 31-year-old arrives on a permanent from North Carolina Courage having joined the American club in 2017. The Cork native – who has wn 128 international caps – has previous experience in the English top flight after a loan move with Brighton & Hove Albion in 2020. She'll join international teammate Leanne Kiernan in the Reds' squad. "It means a lot. It's a very proud moment for myself and also for my family, who are now only a 40-minute flight away," O’Sullivan told the Liverpool website. "Liverpool is a massive club and I think when you join a club as big as Liverpool it comes with massive responsibility and I can't wait to get to work and to give 100 per cent every day." Speaking to the Courage website, she also paid tribute to her now former club. "It's hard to put into words what this club has truly meant to me. Leanne Kiernan is already at Liverpool "North Carolina will always be my home and I'm forever grateful to the club, my teammates and the incredible fans who supported me and believed in me every step of the way. "I'm on to a new challenge now, but I'll always be part of Courage country. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything." O'Sullivan said that she spoke to former Irish player Niamh Fahey, recently appointed the club's first women's technical co-ordinator, as well as Kiernan before joining. "I've had conversations with them and they expressed what it meant for them to be here and how special it is. "I was really excited to come here and having those girls here, I've known them for over 10 years. I played with Niamh for 10 to 15 years and I always looked up to her because she is a leader and I learned a lot from her. So to have her and Leanne here is very special." Gareth Taylor's side are currently bottom of the WSL table having yet to win a game in their first 12 league games.
