Mary Robinson says Trump Board of Peace is a 'delusion of power'
Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson has said Ireland should not join Donald Trump’s new board of peace.
60 countries have been invited to join the board, on which the American president would act as life-chair.
Initial plans were that the board would start out by dealing with the Gaza conflict, and then expand to deal with other world conflicts.

Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee confirmed Ireland had received an invitation but noted ‘careful consideration’ would have to be given to the decision.
Ms McEntee added that the nation was wholly committed to the UN, which she said ‘may be imperfect but is more important now than ever.’
Speaking on Morning Ireland on Monday, former President Mary Robinson made her thoughts very clear that she didn’t think Ireland should partake in what she called a ‘board of power of one person.’

‘It’s not a board of peace,’ she told listeners, ‘I looked very carefully at the charter. The Board of Peace was something that came before the security council in the context of the UN/ US brokered peace deal.
‘The phases of peace that were mentioned, the board of peace was established in reference to the security council to focus on Gaza.’
Ms Robinson noted that there was no mention of Gaza or the mandate from the security council.

‘It’s a completely different board of the power of one person,’ she said, ‘The chair, and the chair for life, is President Trump. The chairman chooses the members and disinvites if he wants to.
‘He has disinvited Prime Minister Carney [Canada] for a speech he made in Davos, which we’ve all applauded. As far as I know, he has not invited any country from Sub-Saharan Africa.
‘There’s no mention of them. That’s the continent that will have the largest population in the world in 2050 – ignored completely.’

Ms Robinson detailed how Trump decided on the executive bodies as chairperson.
‘It’s a board of the power of one person,’ she repeated, ‘It’s a delusion of power, which is where President Trump is, I think now.
‘He’s had the power of the United States of America untethered within the country and outside of the country.’
Ms Robinson went on to note that the United Nations did not need to be replaced, but admitted she thought it needed reform.
‘The UN is still doing a lot of work, including in Gaza,’ she stated.
