Several years into the cost of living crisis and Irish consumers are still witnessing their weekly grocery bill rise.
Fresh data from Worldpanel by Numerator reveals that grocery inflation increased from 6.25% to 6.82% in the 12 weeks leading up to 25 January, 2026. The statistics also indicate that grocery sales grew by 5% in the four week period ending on 25 January.
Despite spending €1.2 billion, Irish shoppers bought 1.9% fewer items than the same period the previous year, suggesting that escalating prices may be compelling some to tighten their purse strings. Dunnes Stores remains at the forefront of the market with a 24.8% share, closely trailed by Tesco at 24.4%, whilst SuperValu holds 19.4%. Lidl accounts for 13.2% and Aldi 10.4%.
Store-brand products are gaining favour, constituting 43.4% of total grocery expenditure, an increase of 0.7% compared to the prior month - with consumers spending over €1.7 billion on own-label goods during the 12 week period. To demonstrate how prices have evolved over time, the Irish Mirror contrasted the cost of 18 everyday items at Dunnes Stores today with their prices in February 2022, reports Cork Beo.
The shopping list included essentials such as milk, potatoes, bread, chicken, fruit and vegetables, opting for the cheapest alternatives and store brand products where feasible.
Four years later, the same basket now costs €7.91 more.
