Angelina Jolie's son Maddox makes shocking name change to distance himself from father Brad Pitt

Angelia Jolie and Brad Pitt's 24-year-old son Maddox has dropped the last name Pitt for his professional credits. The name change was first reported in September 2025 when Angelina's film Couture premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and production notes for the film revealed Maddox was listed as "Maddox Jolie."

The film has now been released in French cinemas, and his name has again been listed simply as Maddox Jolie. HELLO! has contacted reps for Angelina and Brad for comment.

Maddox served as an assistant director on Angelina's movie, in which she stars as an American film director diagnosed with breast cancer as she arrives in France to create editorial content for a fictional Paris fashion show.

It marks a change from 2024 when he was professionally credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt  on his mother's Oscar-nominated film Maria, on which he worked as a production assistant.

Maddox is the fourth child of Angelina and Brad to make this decision, which comes almost 10 years after Angelina filed for divorce in 2016, citing allegations of assault against one of their children during a private jet flight from France to Los Angeles.

Brad has denied these allegations, and an FBI investigation led to no charges filed. Despite this, reports on Brad's strained relationship with their six children have persisted.

Maddox is the first of Brad's three sons to drop the name, with his three daughters, Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivienne all losing the name Pitt in recent years.

In 2023, their eldest adopted daughter, Zahara, introduced herself as “Zahara Marley Jolie” upon joining the Alpha Kappa Mu Pi chapter as a Spelman College in Atlanta, and in 2024 Shiloh also filed to drop the name on her 18th birthday in May 2024

A legal ruling approved the decision.

Also in 2024, Vivienne – then only 15 – was listed as “Vivienne Jolie,” omitting the “Pitt” from her name, in the playbill for The Outsiders, the Tony-winning Broadway play that Vivienne helped worked on as an assistant alongside producer Angelina.

"Viv reminds me of my mother in that she isn't focused on being the center of attention but in being a support to other creatives. She's very thoughtful and serious about theater and working hard to best understand how to contribute," Angelina said at the time.

It is unclear if Maddox, Zahara and Vivienne have legally changed their names.
