DRR 101: Facilitator's Manual

DRR 101: Empowering Young People to Advance Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is a practical, youth-led learning resource designed to equip adolescents and young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead disaster risk reduction efforts in their communities. Developed as a comprehensive Facilitator’s Manual with accompanying downloadable presentation slides, DRR 101 supports peer-to-peer learning through a four-module introductory training on disaster preparedness, climate resilience and community action. The Manual provides step-by-step guidance, interactive activities and facilitation tips, while the ready-to-use slide decks ensure that young facilitators and practitioners can easily deliver engaging sessions in diverse learning environments. The Manual was born out of the momentum of the 2024 Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) and the powerful advocacy of children and youth across the region. In the lead-up to the Conference, young people participated in research, consultations and dialogues that culminated in the Asia-Pacific Children and Youth Call for Action. DRR 101 was conceived as a direct response—transforming young people’s recommendations into a practical, accessible resource. Drafted by members of the UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Young People’s Action Team (YPAT) with technical support from UNICEF’s regional and headquarters teams, the Manual was piloted, refined and strengthened through peer feedback to ensure it is relevant, adaptable and grounded in young people’s lived experiences.Today, DRR 101 stands as a testament to meaningful youth participation and a milestone in advancing child- and youth-led disaster risk reduction across Asia and the Pacific.
