rimowa | the limited edition classic aluminium grid collection

Rimowa is digging into its archives to bring back a look that is both historic and surprisingly modern. The German Maison has just unveiled the Classic Aluminium Grid, a limited edition collection that celebrates its long history of working with metal.

Taking its lead from a set of hand-carry cases developed in 1969, this new range swaps the familiar vertical grooves for a structured geometric pattern. The grid design is pressed into the silver aluminium, creating a visual effect that is sturdy and sophisticated. Only 1969 pieces have been produced, making this a rare chance for travellers to own a piece of the company’s engineering history.

The interior is just as detailed as the outside. Each case features leather accents and a soft quilted lining that mirrors the grid pattern found on the exterior. This attention to detail carries through to the hardware, with polished palladium-finished locks and rivets debossed with tiny aeroplanes. One of the most striking additions is the use of an elegant blue hue for the leather touchpoints. This particular shade pays homage to a historic colour from the brand’s past, adding a distinctive pop of personality to the silver frame.

Craftsmanship remains at the heart of this release, as every piece is built in the historic Cologne factory and comes with a lifetime guarantee. Modern performance is still a priority, however. The cases are equipped with a smooth-rolling wheel system and telescopic handles that can be adjusted to any height.

For the first time in an archival special edition launch, the collection includes a trunk size alongside the more traditional hand-carry and cabin options. This gives long-haul travellers a way to carry the vintage-inspired aesthetic on bigger journeys. Each item comes with its own unique number and a special badge to prove its limited edition status, along with a matching leather luggage tag featuring an archival logo to complete the look.

The collection is now available in stores worldwide as well as online. Discover more here.
