M&S’s Colin the Caterpillar humiliated in taste test – beaten by 8 rival supermarkets

The iconic Colin the Caterpillar has been ranked as the worst caterpillar cake in a contest against eight rival supermarkets. The pioneering chocolate cake, which has been around for over three decades, was put up against various lookalikes, and a panel of cake-testers compared the options, giving each a score out of 100.

Some of the competitors included Waitrose's Cecil Chocolate Sponge Cake, Sainsbury's Wiggles The Caterpillar, and Tesco's Slinky Caterpillar Cake. Despite the M&S version being the "original", it's Colin the Caterpillar Cake that earned a 64% score, placing it at the bottom of the chartboard.

According to Which? contest Iceland's Lewis and Green Caterpillar Cake won the Great Value pick, thanks to its being the cheapest at just £4.50, with testers noting that the cake "has a lovely, moist sponge, and delicious buttercream".

While they added that the chocolate layer was slightly thin and the chocolate could have had a stronger flavour, it is ultimately worth the price, and therefore scored 67%.

Tesco's Slinky Caterpillar Cake, also £4.50, was deemed "too dry" by nearly half the judges and scored 66%. While budget supermarket Aldi's £6.99 Cutherbert Caterpillar Cake bagged itself a spot in the top five with a score of 72%.

At the very top of the chartboard was Waitrose Cecil Chocolate Sponge Cake, which earned a 78% score. The rolled chocolate sponge, filled with chocolate-flavoured buttercream, was praised for a "spot-on" texture, soft buttercream, and the right amount of sweetness, with a "perfect" sponge-to-buttercream ratio.

M&S, however, stands firm on Colin being "the nation's best caterpillar cake", backed by an independent YouGov poll.

The retailer added: "Made and finished by hand in the UK for over 35 years, it leads the market on quality and taste. It has the highest chocolate content on the market, at 39.5%, with milk chocolate made from 31% cocoa solids and 100% Fairtrade cocoa.

"At M&S, blind-taste testers regularly taste our products against the market to ensure we remain number one for taste and quality – this includes our Colin cakes, which consistently come first in taste tests."
